Italy¡¯s Rail Network Paralyzed! Route Disruptions Impact Multiple Port Shipments

According to a report from Kuehne+Nagel, a series of railway construction projects and temporary line closures in Italy will disrupt rail services in the coming weeks. The rail operation disruptions span multiple regions, requiring adjustments to train routes, availability, as well as loading and unloading conditions.

Anticipated Rail Disruptions & Affected Ports

Until February 28, 2026Affected Port: Gioia Tauro Only one track at San Ferdinando Station is operational, potentially causing delays and disruptions. The original plan to expand to three tracks by late February 2026 is now uncertain.


January 14-23, 2026 & January 26-February 28, 2026Affected Port: Gioia Tauro Phase 1: S. Vito Lanciano¨CS. Severo¨CTermoli line suspended; Phase 2: Bari Parco Nord¨CGioia del Colle line suspended. Bologna¨CGioia Tauro trains diverted via Prato. Oversized containers only allowed on low-floor freight wagons.


February 10-12, 2026Affected Location: NOLA Interporto Napoli¨CBari line suspended. All trains canceled on Feb 10-11; services may resume at 12:00 on Feb 12.


February 16-March 29, 2026Affected Ports: La Spezia, Genoa Genova Brignole line suspended; trains diverted via Pontremoli with reduced capacity. Pontremoli route closed on Feb 21 and March 21.
