On August 18 (local time), the CMA CGM J. MADISON, a large containership operated by CMA CGM, caught fire while sailing from Singapore to Khalifa Port, UAE.

The vessel was serving the Middle East CIMEX1 route and had previously called at multiple major Chinese ports, including Ningbo, Qingdao, and Shekou, carrying export cargo from China.

Following the incident, CMA CGM immediately activated emergency protocols. In a notice to customers, the company confirmed the fire has been contained, the vessel is stable and safely anchored off Port Klang, Malaysia, and is undergoing comprehensive inspections and ongoing assessments. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far.

CMA CGM stated that the number of affected containers, their identities, and the extent of damage remain undetermined at this stage, as evaluations are still in progress.

Shippers and freight forwarders with cargo aboard should closely monitor updates and prepare contingency plans to mitigate potential ripple effects from expected schedule delays.
